How to Get to the Banyak Islands

Your final destination should be Gunung Sitoli. We will meet you at the airport (GNS), North Sumatra.

Our team will pick you up at the airport and take you to the boat, from where we leave around 6:00 pm.

Flights

You should follow the following route:

Kuala Lumpur (KUL) or Jakarta (JAK) > Medan (KNO) > Gunung Sitoli (GNS)

Your first destination should be either Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia or Jakarta in Indonesia (we recommend this option). From one of these cities you should then take a second flight to Medan (KNO).

Medan will not be your final destination. Once there, you should schedule a domestic flight to Gunung Sitoli (GNS).

In Medan

When you get off the plane, go to customs control. Keep your documentation in hand, and be patient. The control processes at Medan airport are slow.

When picking up your luggage we recommend that you do not accept assistance from anyone.

We also recommend that you exchange money in Medan to have some money in the local currency.

The airport has ATM machines, and VISA and MASTERCARD work in many of the machines.

US$ 1 is approximately 14,000 rupiahs.

You will not need much money, and once on board the boat you will forget your wallet exists. Change only what you need for the departure tax in Medan (Rupiah 200,000) and some change for crew tips, lunch at the airport, massage, and the beer on arrival in Gunung Sitoli.

USD 200 will be more than enough. You can exchange it back to your USD if you do not use it all.

If you are asked to give an address in Indonesia, use the boat’s name: “Seriti Boat Charter”.

From Medan to Gunung Sitoli

From Medan, you will need to take a short flight of about 1 hour to Gunung Sitoli (GNS).

We reccomend flying Citilink to avoid delays and lost/ broken surfboards.

This flight can be booked at www.traveloka.com

We recommend that you spend the first and last night of your trip in Medan at the Horizon Hotel. This is because it is normal for boards to be left behind due to limitations in flight space. By staying for a day in Medan, you allow time for the boards to be transported from Medan to Gunung Sitoli, arriving safely on the boat (& back to Medan).

In Gunung Sitoli

Once you are in Gunung Sitoli, a member of our staff will meet you at the airport, and drive you safely in an air-conditioned van to the port of Lahewa, where Seriti will be docked awaiting your arrival.

Later, our skipper will meet you, and ask for the paperwork for the checkout at the port.

When Returning

After the night’s return crossing, you will wake up anchored in the harbor.

After breakfast, you will be transported in an air-conditioned van to Gunung Sitoli (GNS), the airport from which you will take your flight to Medan (KNO).

We recommend that you leave Medan on the same day that the surftrip ends, in case your flight to the next city is before 8 pm.
